App terms of service

Last updated .

These terms govern your use of the Gatekeep Shopify app. This website is covered by a separate document, the site terms of service. How the app handles data is described in the app privacy policy.

What the app does

Gatekeep blocks checkout when an order is headed to a jurisdiction where a product you have mapped to a covered category is restricted, using the rule library Gatekeep researches and maintains. That library is not published: it is applied at checkout rather than handed to you as a reference. You choose which products map to which categories, and the app enforces the mapping you configure.

Plans

Plans differ only in how many product categories they cover: Single, Standard, Plus, as described on the pricing page. All prices are in US dollars per month and exclude any tax that applies to you.

The free trial

Every plan starts with a 14-day free trial. If you cancel before the trial ends you are not charged. If you do not cancel, the plan's monthly charge begins when the trial ends.

Each shop gets one free trial in total, not one per plan. Once a shop has started a trial on any plan, that shop is not eligible for another trial on any other plan. In practice:

  • Upgrading or downgrading does not start a new trial. The new plan is billed from the day you switch.
  • Uninstalling and reinstalling does not restore an unused trial or grant a new one.
  • A trial counts as used once it starts, even if you cancel on the first day and even if you never configured the app.

Trial eligibility is recorded against your shop. Shopify grants a trial per subscription and does not track whether a shop has trialled before, so this rule is enforced by Gatekeep rather than by Shopify. We say so plainly because a trial that silently fails to apply when you change plan would otherwise look like a fault.

Billing

Billing runs through Shopify's billing system and appears on your Shopify invoice. You authorise the recurring charge when you approve the subscription in Shopify. Gatekeep never sees or stores your card details. Shopify's own terms govern the payment itself, including how and when Shopify collects it.

Cancelling

Cancel at any time by uninstalling the app or cancelling the subscription in your Shopify admin. Cancellation stops future charges. Your access continues to the end of the period you have already paid for, and the app stops blocking checkout as soon as it is uninstalled: after that, orders to restricted destinations go through unless something else stops them.

Refunds

[Unresolved: the refund position needs a decision before launch.] The free trial exists so you can evaluate the app before paying. Any refund beyond that is at Gatekeep's discretion unless the law where you are gives you a right to one.

Price changes

Prices may change with at least 30 days' notice to your shop's contact address. A price change never applies to a period you have already paid for. If you do not accept it, cancel before it takes effect.

Your responsibilities

You are responsible for mapping your products to the right categories, for keeping that mapping current as your catalogue changes, and for your own legal compliance. Gatekeep cannot tell whether a product you have not mapped is regulated, and it does not inspect your catalogue for you.

What the app does not promise

Gatekeep is not legal advice and using it creates no lawyer-client relationship. The rule library summarizes published sources as of each rule's review date; legislatures amend, courts strike provisions down, and agencies reinterpret. Blocking a destination is not a statement that shipping elsewhere is lawful, and allowing one is not advice that a sale is permitted. Compliance remains yours. See the disclaimer and sources and methods.

The app depends on Shopify's platform and APIs. It cannot block an order placed through a channel it does not control, and it is not a guarantee against every unlawful shipment.

Acceptable use

Do not resell or redistribute the rule library as a competing product, attempt to extract it in bulk, interfere with the app's operation, or use it to break the law. One subscription covers one Shopify shop.

Availability

Gatekeep does not offer a guaranteed uptime level. The app is maintained in good faith and may be unavailable during maintenance, during a Shopify outage, or for reasons outside our control.

Suspension and termination

Gatekeep may suspend or end your access for non-payment, for a breach of these terms, or if required by law or by Shopify. Where circumstances allow, notice will be given first. You may stop using the app at any time.

No warranty

The app is provided as is, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of accuracy, completeness, merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Gatekeep is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential loss, for lost sales or profits, or for fines, penalties or enforcement action arising from your sales. Total liability for any claim is limited to the fees you paid for the app in the twelve months before the claim arose. Nothing here excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.

Indemnity

You agree to indemnify Gatekeep against claims arising from your sales, your use of the app, or your breach of these terms, except to the extent the claim is caused by Gatekeep.

Changes to these terms

These terms may change. Material changes will be notified in the app or by email to your shop's contact address before they take effect, and the date above changes with them. Continuing to use the app after that is acceptance.

Governing law

[Unresolved: governing law, jurisdiction and the contracting entity's legal name and address must be filled in before the app is listed. These depend on where the business is established, which is not a detail to guess at.]

Contact

A monitored contact address must be published here before the app is listed. The Shopify App Store requires a support contact, and terms nobody can ask about are not terms anyone can rely on.
